Forensic Entomology

dept-entomologyHuman remains exposed to the natural environment may be quickly colonized and consumed by various types of insects and their larvae. The extent of the colonization and development is dependent upon environmental conditions, type of exposure, and extent of traumatic injury. Some information may be provided as to the cause of death through the interpretation of various types of colonization patterns and insect species present in conjunction with other relevant information. In order to make use of this type of evidence, it is essential that samples of insects and insect larvae be properly collected and preserved.
